Karachi Spine 2013

World Spinal Column Society is a world body of spinal surgeons which works for the interest and betterment of trainees of spine worldwide. The society consists of the top neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons in the world who exchange innovative technology and share experiences through society meetings. The WSCS has a congress every alternate year and runs cadaver courses all over the world. Keeping this tradition, WSCS in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery of Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College and Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons organized a comprehensive didactic and ‘hands on’ spine workshop from 14th to 16th March, 2013 in Karachi.

The first day of the workshop was based on Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (MISS) and Endoscopic Disc Surgery. There were informative discussions on various minimally invasive spine procedures with their indications, techniques and outcomes by M. Zileli, D. Orr, I. Polythodorakis, A. Shad, M.  Imran, A. Younus, S. Vaishya, G. Trost (via video link), M.Imtiaz Tariq, M. Alfawareh, and S. Sharif. Following the lectures, different cases were discussed and multiple didactic sessions with emphasis on various approaches of such techniques were presented and practiced. Dr. Salman Sharif wrapped up the first day of the workshop and invited the cordial guests to join him in the Gala Dinner at Sind Club, Karachi.

On the second day, there was an interactive discussion on Endoscopic Craniocervical and Thoracolumbar Vertebroplasty by M. Zilei, D. Orr, J. Oertel, A. Shad and I. Polythodorakis which was followed by hands on cadaver session. Then there were case discussions on Endoscopic Discectomy of Cervical and Lumbar Spine, Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Fixation, Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty by M. Zileli, A. Shad, I. Polythodorakis, S. Sharif and D. Orr. At the end of the second day, a dinner was organized at Port Grand, Karachi. The dinner turned out to be a great social gathering in which sindhi shawl, pakhtoon caps and other gifts were given to all participants. At the end, Dr Salman Faridi, the Medical Director of Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College thanked all the honored guests and speakers for giving their time for this workshop which will help the upcoming neurosurgeons of Pakistan.

On the last day, there was discussion on Bone Physiology and Graft Alternatives in Spine Surgery, and Fundamentals of Biomechanics and Implant Failure by A. Younus and M. Alfawareh. And it was followed by different case discussions by E. Benzel (via skype), M. Zileli, D. Orr, R. Jooma and T. Salahuddin. At the end of this day, there was course evaluation for the participants. And the workshop was wrapped up by a closing ceremony on 16th March, 2013 in which Prof Ahmed Ali Shah presented souvenirs and certificates to the faculty and participants.

KarachiSpine2013 was a comprehensive workshop supervised by experience and world-renowned surgeons from United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Greece, South Africa, Saudia Arabia and Pakistan. This intensive course which focused on the fundamentals of spine surgery was designed to help the young spine surgeons in this part of the world improve the basic as well as the latest surgical skills related to different spinal diseases. 

World Spinal Column Society has been working over years to provide a platform for surgeons all over the world to come together to exchange experiences and train the upcoming surgeons. With the immense enthusiasm and support by the participants and faculty, WSCS will continue to provide this platform in the coming years.
