MINIMALLY INVASIVE SKULL BASE COURSE 2017

Continuing with its tradition, the Neurosurgery Department, Liaquat National Hospital & Medical college, in collaboration with WFNS, PSN, ACNS & IFNE conducted a two-day cadaveric hands-on minimally invasive workshop from 11th to 12th February, 2017.

Iype Cherian (Nepal), director of the course, started with the basics and anatomy of Orbitozygomatic Approach, and the carotid. The Anatomy of Anterior and Posterior Petrosal Bone and the orbitozygomatic approach with its variations was discussed by Victor Hugo Perez (Mexico). Albert Sufianov (Russia) continued to discuss the access with anterior posterior petrosectomy and variation and the posterior petrosal approach. The approach was then practically demonstrated by Iype Cherian and the faculty. Azam Ahmed (USA) gave a talk on endoscopic skull base surgery. Salman Sharif, director of skull base course, gave a talk on CSF fistula. The use of electrophysiology in Sensory-Motor cortical mapping; monitoring of cranial nerves and corticospinal tracts during brain surgeries was highlighted by Tariq Imtiaz (Saudia Arabia). The first day was then wrapped up by a video session on Supraorbital craniotomy via lateral supraorbital approach, supervised by Joachim Oertel (Germany), followed by an interactive discussion and quiz session engaging the participants. The day ended with a Gala dinner at the Movenpick Hotel, where the invited guest and participants had a good time by the poolside to relax and enjoy the evening.

The 2nd day of the workshop focused on the sino-nasal approach, the anatomy was well explained by Khalid Mehmood (Pak) and Victor Hugo Perez discussed the approaches. Dr. Azam Ahmed highlighted the use of Brain path endoscopic assisted craniotomy and the Eye brow orbitotomy. Prof. Tariq Salahuddin (Pak) gave a talk on the endoscopic anterior skull base approach for removal of space occupying lesions and demonstrated on a cadaver to the participants. Iype Cherian, beautifully showed the FOZ approach and provided the participants with a hands-on. The workshop was joined by Spyros Sgouros President, IFNE (Greece) and Franco Servaidi, President-Elect, WFNS (Italy). The workshop was concluded by a short quiz for the participants supervised the elite faculty. The faculty was then take for the Trip to Lahore.
